If you're reading this article, I think it's safe to assume that you don't want to go with the very easiest way to avoid a speeding ticket: don't speed. You're busy, you've got place to go and people to see. Or maybe it's just fun to go a little faster. Whatever the reason, if you're going to speed there's a risk that you'll be caught and ticketed. It stands to reason, then, that taking some precautions against getting caught is a good idea. Here are a few things you can do to reduce the chances of receiving a speeding ticket.
- Pay attention to traffic
You are much less likely to be ticketed if you are driving around the same speed as the rest of traffic. If the entire freeway is moving at 10 miles over the limit, they can't stop everyone. Of course, you probably want to go a little faster than everyone else. The key here is a little faster. You'll stand out like a sore thumb if you are going 20 miles per hour over the speed limit. Try to keep it within a few miles of the rest of the traffic. If traffic is going about the speed limit, you should be ok pushing it to 10, but if traffic is already moving along well over the limit, don't exceed everyone else by much.
- Don't engage in aggressive driving
Weaving in and out of traffic while speeding is a great way to get the attention of The Law. You're creating dangerous situations, and that's exactly what the police are looking to shut down. If you are speeding but driving safely and carefully, there's a lot better chance that law enforcement will turn a blind eye. Don't ride on the bumper of the person in front of you, use signals when changing lanes, etc. In other words, obey as many traffic laws and conventions as possible.
- Pay attention to police 'hotspots'.
There are certain types of places that cops like to hang out. If you are willing to adjust your speed as you approach those areas, like overpasses, you can improve your chances of a ticket-free trip. Even if you don't slow for each, if you at least raise your alertness and keep an eye out as you approach these, you may be able to slow down before they clock you. This will be even easier if there are other cars around, which brings us to the next point.
- Stick with other cars
There are so many reasons for this one. First, you're less likely to get pulled over in general if you're driving with other traffic. The police are primarily looking to pull people over that are outside the norm. If you're with a group of people going over the limit, there's a better chance of them just leaving you alone. Then, if they do decide to pull someone over, it won't necessarily be you. It could be the guy in front of you, the guy behind you, etc. Random chance dictates you've got a better shot if you are with other cars. Finally, you'll have more time to slow down if you see a cop when there's a car blocking line of sight to you. You can jam on the brakes before the radar hits you.
Not speeding is the best bet when it comes to avoiding speeding tickets, but if you are going to go faster than the posted limit, you'll be well served by paying attention to these four tips.
